Site Location :

The majority of the site is a 20.5 kilometre swathe of road, located between Dungannon and Ballygawley in the vicinity of the existing A4 Trunk Road between these two towns. It also includes 3.8 kilometre stretch close to the A4 at Annaghilla and a 3.1 kilometre stretch close to the A5 at Tullyvar.

Description of Works:

The project will consist of 3 separate schemes:

  • Realignment and upgrading to dual carriageway of the A4 between Dungannon and Ballygawley including upgrading of the existing junctions.
  • Realignment of the A4 at Annaghilla including an overtaking lane.
  • Realignment of the A5 at Tullyvar including climbing lanes.

Scheme 3A :

Approximately 20.5km of all-purpose 2 lane dual carriageway between Dungannon and Ballygawley

  • Realignment of minor roads
  • 22 No. bridges and structures at minor road and watercourse crossings
  • 1 No. roundabout at the western end of the scheme
  • 6 No. grade separated junctions
  • 1 No. partial grade separated junction
  • 3 No. left in/left out at grade junctions
  • New link roads associated with the new junctions
  • Accommodation and environmental mitigation works
  • A Safety Barrier running the length of scheme along the central reserve

Scheme 3B

A4 Annaghilla Realignment:

  • Approximately 3.8km of single carriageway road between Augher and Ballygawley
  • Realignment of minor roads
  • Provision of 2nd lane heading east bound to provide an overtaking opportunity
  • 1 No. Bridge at Halftown Road
  • Accommodation and environmental mitigation works

Approximately 3.1km of single carriageway road between Ballygawley and Aughnacloy

  • Realignment of minor roads
  • Provision of climbing lanes in both directions over the hill to provide overtaking opportunities
  • Accommodation and environmental mitigation works

On all three schemes construction works will take place adjacent to live running public roads. Access must also be maintained to residential properties and agricultural accesses adjacent to these public roads at all times.

This work will be delivered using a Public Private Partnership (PPP) known as Design, Build, Finance and Operate (DBFO) This involves a private sector consortium designing, constructing and financing the road improvements as well as subsequently maintaining the road for the next 30 years.
